LUZIA a Must-See Cirque de Soleil Show

By Michele Pullo June 22, 2017
Last week I was fortunate enough to attend Cirque du Soleil's amazing production of Luzia.  It was beautiful, but that word isn't enough to capture everything the show makes you feel.  Every aspect of the show takes your breath away.  From the performers to the costumes to the sets, it truly is a show you just have to see to believe.

Luzia takes you on a journey into a "waking dream" through the beauty of Mexico.  The performers guide you to let your imagination take flight in this colorful spectacle of sight and sound.  The cast moves equally with skill and grace as they morph into birds and flowers, lizards and snakes!  The visions continue as the rain begins and somehow you see beautiful images within the falling water.  A-m-a-z-I-n-g!

The performers come from many different backgrounds and skills.  The 44 member cast includes performers from several different countries.  It's a United Nations of the performing world!  The two cast members on the right have an acrobatic background and perform in a trio act where this incredibly talented woman is creatively flung from one partner to another.  The strength and agility it must take to "fly" the way she does is amazing.  The gentlemen that toss and catch her are so completely focused and attuned to each partner's timing, it's remarkable to watch.  The "Strong Man" of the group (guess which one he is in the picture) stacks small poles into very small disc-like platforms and balances with pure strength.  He continues to rise on these tiny "sticks" until he's almost reached the extremely high ceiling.  It definitely makes you a little nervous for him!

The costumes!  Oh, the costumes.  Simply stunning.  It was fascinating to see them up close.  The picture below is a bird costume that looks just like feathers from the audience but it's really made out of lycra!  By using softer materials the performers are able to perform their various acts without being impeded by what they're wearing.  They can also machine wash them!  Cirque du Soleil spends millions of dollars on their costumes and they're used for several years.

So much work goes into each Cirque show, each venue set up and each performance.  They hire local folks for many of the concession jobs at every venue they visit.  What is amazing to me is that they travel with something like 64 trucks to set up this particular show!  They also travel with a cook, a physical therapist and a masseuse to keep their cast in peak condition.  The term, "it takes a village" certainly comes to mind when it comes to Cirque du Soleil.

If you're considering getting tickets, check out the ad at the top of my website and newsletter.  It's perfect for a family night, date night or even a girls night out!  You will not be disappointed.  Luzia is here in Denver at the Pepsi Center until July 9th.
