A NOTE FROM YOUR PUBLISHER: Parenting through a Pandemic

We've Got This!

By Michele Pullo, Publisher and Editor of Macaroni Kid Longmont-Frederick March 14, 2020

The Corona Virus Pandemic of 2020 is like nothing we've seen before.  Not knowing what will happen or how long it will take to run its course is frustrating and scary however, we are parents...  We have children who look to us to know if they should be worried.  Children feed off our energy so we need to be strong, calm, and rational.  Yes, we needed to stock up on a few things, but we don't need to take more than we need.  This is a great lesson for children to learn and there will be many more learning opportunities in the coming days.  So this is my suggestion; when you start feeling that "circling the drain" feeling, take a deep breath to remember that you can rise up to the challenge and teach your children resilience in that moment.

How will Macaroni Kid fit in during this crisis?  I will be shifting the focus from our Family Fun Calendar to Family Fun Articles and Guides that will give you ideas for fun crafts, activities, and local resources that you can use from home.  I'm compiling a list of local businesses that can provide their goods and services either online or through home delivery.  If you have any in mind that would be a good fit for local families, please email me at michelep@macaronikid.com.  You can also follow me on FB, and Instagram.

I know it's not easy to demonstrate calm when you're freaking out inside, but try the old "fake it 'til you make it".

Here are a few other tips to help you maintain your center;

1. Breathe slow and deep every chance you get!

2. Eat healthy foods to support your nervous system (and immune system!).

3. MOVE!  Exercise outside, bike rides with your kids, yoga at home.. Impromptu dance parties with your kids can boost your mood and give you energy!

4. Do a little something for yourself each day; a nice bath, read a good book, binge watch The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel... you get the idea.  ; )

If I can help in any way, please let me know.  I'm a local parent and going through all the same emotions.  If we work together, we may just come out of this a stronger, tighter community.
