Technology! Can’t live with it, can’t live without it! I don’t know about you, but I have a love/hate relationship with technology. I love all the conveniences it offers me, but when it comes to my kids… I get mighty protective. Sure, it’s fun for my son to play Minecraft on his phone for 20 hours a day, but when it’s time to put it away and my son turns into the Incredible Hulk, I really wonder if it’s worth it.
My daughter is younger, (she’s 9) and finds it incredibly unfair that she should have to wait until she’s 13 to get a phone, like her brother. She loves to ride her bike around the neighborhood and there have been several instances where she’s gone beyond our boundaries. I had thought about getting a GPS device with a calling feature. It would help keep my sanity, while allowing her to have a little room to explore. I’ve found the answer… Relay!
Relay is a small, palm sized device with easy push-to-talk communication and nationwide 4G range. The GPS tracking option is amazing! I set up a perimeter around my block and receive an alert if my adventurous girl wanders beyond it. I can’t tell you how good it feels to know where she is and that she’s safe!
She was thrilled to have a phone of her own, but quite honestly, I love being able to call her at a friend’s house to tell her it’s time for dinner or ask her where she hid her brother’s headphones. I can tell she enjoys being able to communicate with me when she needs something. I like to think she just wants to hear my voice…

I ordered two devices so I can use one, or let my son use it when they go to the park together. You can communicate through your own smart phone via the free app. I can’t wait to use this when school starts. Unexpected snowstorm? My daughter can call to tell me she’s waiting for drive line. It’s also pretty rugged and water-resistant, and you can also purchase an accessory kit to hook it on a backpack or belt loop, to make sure it doesn’t get lost.
